En la mitología griega, Brontes (en griego Βροντης, ‘el que truena’) formaba junto con Estéropes y Arges la primera generación de Cíclopes, hijos de Urano y Gea. Eran gigantes con un solo ojo en mitad de la frente y un temperamento horrible, conocidos como buenos artesanos y constructores.

Según Hesíodo eran fuertes, testarudos, y de «bruscas emociones». Sus nombres terminaron siendo sinónimo de fuerza y poder, y se usaban para referirse a armas especialmente bien manufacturadas.

Ciclopes

Los Cíclopes de la primera generación eran hijos de Urano y Gea, y conocidos artesanos y constructores. Eran gigantes con un solo ojo en mitad de la frente y un temperamento horrible. Según Hesíodo eran fuertes, testarudos, y de «bruscas emociones». Eventualmente sus nombres llegaron a ser sinónimo de fuerza y poder, y se usaban para referirse a armas especialmente bien manufacturadas.

Fueron tres: Brontes, Estéropes y Arges (aunque algunas fuentes cambian a Arges por Acmónides o Piracmón). Había también otros cuatro llamadosEuríalo, Elatreo, Traquio y Halimedes, que presumiblemente eran hijos de los tres primeros.

Urano temía su fuerza y les encerró en el Tártaro. Más tarde Crono, otro hijo de Urano y Gea, liberó a los Cíclopes, junto con los Hecatónquiros y losGigantes. Le ayudaron a derrocar y castrar a Urano, pero Crono les volvió a encarcelar en Tártaro, donde permanecieron, guardados por Campe, hasta que Zeus los liberó. Forjaron rayos para que Zeus los usase como arma y le ayudaron en la guerra para derrocar a Crono y a los otros Titanes(Titanomaquia). Los rayos que se convirtieron en el arma predilecta de Zeus fueron forjados por los tres Cíclopes: Arges ponía el brillo, Brontes el trueno, y Estéropes el relámpago.

Esta primera generación de Cíclopes también creó un tridente que producía terremotos para Poseidón, el arco y las flechas de Artemisa, y el casco de invisibilidad que Hades le dio a Perseo en su búsqueda para matar a Medusa. Ayudaron a Hefesto y se dice que construyeron el primer altar, así como las murallas y fortificaciones de Tirinto y Micenas en el Peloponeso, entre otras. Los ruidos que surgían del corazón de los volcanes se atribuían a sus operaciones.

Se cuenta posteriormente que fue Apolo quien mató a los Cíclopes, después de que Zeus matase a su hijo, Asclepio, con un rayo forjado por ellos. Aunque puede suponerse que estos cíclopes eran inmortales, por lo que quizá los cíclopes que Apolo mató fuesen sus hijos.

In a famous episode of Homer's Odyssey, the hero Odysseus encounters the Cyclops Polyphemus, the son of Poseidon and a nereid (Thoosa), who lives with his fellow Cyclopes in a distant country. The connection between the two groups has been debated in antiquity and by modern scholars.^[2] It is upon Homer's account that Euripides and Virgil based their accounts of the mythical creatures.

Se las consideraba las ninfas del mar, puesto que vivían en las profundidades del océano; no obstante emergían a la superficie para ayudar a marineros que surcaban los procelosos mares, siendo los argonautas los más famosos entre los que socorrieron mientras viajaban en búsqueda del vellocino de oro. Se aparecen a los hombres del mar montadas en delfines y otros animales marinos. Los griegos las adoraban en altares en las orillas de mares y acantilados, donde se les ofrendaba leche, aceite y miel.

Representaban todo aquello que hubiese de hermoso y amable en el mar. Cantaban con voz melodiosa y bailaban alrededor de su padre. Se las representa coronadas por ramas de coral y portando el tridente de Poseidón, de cuyo séquito formaban parte.

Jörmundgander o Jörmungandr, también llamada la "Serpiente de Midgard" (Miðgarðsormr en nórdico antiguo, Midgårdsormen en sueco y danés moderno), es una gigantesca serpiente que ronda Midgard (o Midgård) hasta el día del Ragnarök. Es un monstruo masculino. Tiene al dios Loki como padre y a la giganta Angrboda como madre, y cuando los Æsir se enteraron de este ser maligno engendrado por tan terribles padres, y vieron con su don de la adivinación las cosas terribles que haría, decidieron encargarse del monstruo. Odín lo lanzó al mar que rodea Midgard, donde quedará atrapada hasta el día de la destrucción total (Ragnarök). Jormundgander creció tanto que mordiéndose la cola podría abrazar toda la tierra. Jörmungandr ['jœrmuŋgandr], mostly known as Jormundgand, Midgårdsormen, or World Serpent, is a sea serpent of the Norse mythology, the middle child of the giantess Angrboða and the god Loki. According to the Prose Edda, Odin took Loki's three children, Fenrisúlfr, Hel and Jörmungandr. He tossed Jörmungandr into the great ocean that encircles Midgard. The serpent grew so big that he was able to surround the Earth and grasp his own tail, and as a result he earned the alternate name of the Midgard Serpent or World Serpent. Jörmungandr's arch enemy is the god Thor.
